Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s prime beach destination.
Carved from the jungles in the 1950s as Cambodia’s first deep sea port, Sihanoukville was named after the Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk who chartered its construction.
The town is wrapped on three sides by the Bay of Thailand and sandy beaches. Downtown Sihanoukville’s colonial French architecture is aging, but the markets that spring up in the center of town are still vibrant. Fresh produce abounds, and smoothies made from locally grown fruits are a local treat that should not be missed.
Heading straight from the center of town towards the ocean you arrive at Occheuteal Beach. It’s the center of Sihanoukville’s night life, and the most developed beach area in the region. Restaurants and bars line the beach front offering a range for cuisines and specialty cocktails. As the sunsets, Occheuteal Beach begins to shine as travelers head in from the beaches to fill the numerous bars. Fire spinners are a common sight, and many of the bars will have free shoes on their patios or the beach front to draw in business.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed environment, heading north or south along the beach reveals a number of quiet stretches of sand like Serendipity and Otres beaches. Charming bungalows with attached restaurants dot the shore in both directions as you head away from central Sihanoukville, and it’s easy to find the a sandy stretch that’s exactly as busy or isolated as you want it to be.
