Two of the highlights of your time in Varanasi are the sunrise and sunset cruises on the Ganga.Start your day with an early morning boat cruise on the Ganga. The best time to visit the Ghats is at dawn, as that is when the pilgrims take their morning dip. It is also the ideal opportunity to experience some of Hinduisms ancient and iconic rituals. You can simultaneously witness the ceremony of a recently deceased Hindu’s ashes being immersed in the river, while nearby, another Brahmin priest orchestrates the naming ceremony of a newborn. Your boat offers an excellent view of all the activity on the Ghats - women bathing discreetly while still wearing their sarees, priests offering prayers as they immerse themselves in the holy water, men that are oblivious to their surroundings as they practice yoga or meditate on the banks of the Ganga. Return to your hotel for breakfast and some relaxation. Afternoon - after lunch you will enjoy a guided excursion to neighboring Sarnath. Explore the monuments of this holy city, including the ancient Dhamekha Stupa that is located near the spot where the Buddha preached his first few sermons. This Stupa was constructed by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE. Sarnath was also where the first Sangha was formed and the area is home to a number of other Buddhist monuments that you will briefly visit, including the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Mulagandhakuti Vihara temple. A highlight of the visit to Sarnath is the Archaeological Museum, with its small but impressive collection of local artifacts. Feb 21st: Varanasi. You are at leisure in the morning to enjoy the facilities and views of your hotel. Afternoon - after lunch you will visit the unique Bharat Mata (Mother India) temple, dedicated not to gods and goddesses, but to Mother India herself. Inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936, this relatively modern temple houses an intricate relief map of the Indian subcontinent, carved entirely from white marble. From here you will experience a walking city tour of Varanasi that includes visits to some of the ancient temples that lie along the banks of the holy river. You will walk through the narrow lanes and through the crowded bazaars to discover a way of life that has not changed much over the past few millennia. You will get to see India’s most popular traditional dance forms, such as Kathakali, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, and Manipuri. The dance performances start at 7 pm and continue until 10 pm. Feb 23rd: Khajuraho. Start your day with a guided tour of awe-inspiring Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho. These magnificent examples of Hindu religious art were constructed about a thousand years ago. Thousands of extremely detailed stone sculptures adorn the facades of these temples, and the subject matter includes some very explicit erotic scenes. The sophisticated design and building techniques that were used in the creation of these temples and the detailed artistry of the sculptures cannot be described in words - you have to experience them personally to grasp their impact. Return to your hotel for lunch and you are at leisure until evening. In the evening you will enjoy the Khajuraho Dance Festival. Feb 24th: Khajuraho. Explore the eastern group of the Khajuraho temples, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. These magnificent examples of Jain and Hindu religious art were mostly constructed well over a thousand years ago. Although the eastern group of temples has less explicit erotic sculptures, especially in the Jain Temples, the structures and their incredible sculptures are well worth the visit. Return to your hotel for lunch and you are at leisure until evening. In the evening you will enjoy the Khajuraho Dance Festival. Feb 25th: Khajuraho - Varanasi - Kolkata. Built by Sir William Emerson, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, it houses a fine collection of paintings, artifacts, sculptures, books and manuscripts. You can also visit Kolkata’s famous Kali Temple. A walk across the bustling Howrah Bridge is highly recommended, and at one end of the bridge is Asia’s largest wholesale flower market, also well worth a visit. Feb 28th: Kolkata. You are assisted with your check out from your hotel in the early morning and driven to the airport to board the short flight to Bagan. The landscape at Bagan is surreal as about 3000 pagoda’s dot the lush countryside of this ancient town. Upon your arrival, you are greeted by your guide and chauffeur and driven to Nyaung Oo market. This bustling small market is always full of local shoppers buying a variety of beans, sesame, vegetables, flowers, bamboo wares, various kinds of Thanakar, and many other consumables local to this region. You will now visit Shwezigon Pagoda, a great example of prototypical Burmese architecture. It was built of sandstone carried from the quarry at Turintaung Ranges (seven miles away from Shwezigon) by using a chain of people. As you explore Bagan, please feel free to ask your guide to stop whenever you see something interesting – photo op’s are everywhere you turn. Next you will visit Wetgyi-in Gyubyaukgyi Temple, which was built in the early 13th century and is famous for its well preserved colorful wall paintings that depict scenes from the 550 jatak life stories of the Buddha. Drive a short distance and visit the Anada Temple, one of the most impressive and exquisite monuments of Bagan. It was built by King Kyansittha in 1091 A.D. and it stands out among the hundreds of ancient structures around it. The last of this morning’s experiences is the Dhamayangyi Temple, the largest temple in Bagan. The craftsmanship of this temple is widely regarded as one of the best examples of precision brick work during the Bagan Era. There is a break for lunch, which can be enjoyed at a restaurant on the banks of the scenic Irrawaddy River. After lunch you are assisted with your check in to your boutique upscale resort and then you are at leisure for a couple of hours. If you are not interested in leisure, you can opt to visit a local facility where you can observe the detailed manufacturing process of handmade Myanmar lacquerware. Late afternoon - enjoy an excursion to the Thabyinnyu Temple, which is the tallest in Bagan, and offers great sunset views to those that are bold enough to climb the steep stairs to its viewpoint. This thousand year old monument is purported to house some of Lord Buddha’s hair. Mar 3rd: Bagan - Mandalay. You are at leisure in the early morning - your guide and chauffeur driven vehicle are available to you from 9:30 AM onwards. In the mid-morning you have the option to return back to Bagan’s surreal landscape with its pagoda’s, stupa’s and temples. You can also opt be driven to the palm forest where you can observe the agrarian lifestyle of the local farmers. Their primary occupation is the extraction of palm juice from palm trees, which is then used to make a popular Myanmar candy called Jaggery. You are assisted with your check-out by noon and then there is a break for lunch. After lunch you are driven through Myanmar’s rural countryside for 4.5 hours to the ancient capital of Mandalay, where you are assisted with your check-in. Mar 4th: Mandalay. In the morning you are driven to Amarapura, the 18th Century capital of Myanmar. You will now visit Myanmar’s largest monastery, Maha Gandayon Monastery where you will have the opportunity to observe a fascinating ritual, after exploring the grounds and facilities of the monastery. You will watch as over a thousand young Buddhist monks line up, and then consume their main meal of the day. These monks range from about six years of age to early manhood and Myanmar’s largest monastery is where they are educated. The ritual takes about an hour before the last of the young men gets seated. Myanmar’s affluent families provide these meals and there is a waiting line of months for this privilege. You will also explore the monastery complex on foot and peek into the living quarters of the monks. The kitchens where some of the meal is prepared in massive quantities are also worth a visit. At Amarapura you will also have the option to observe traditional silk weaving as it is the local specialty. The craftsmen meticulously design and manually create the silk garments that are worn by Burmese for special occasions like wedding ceremonies, graduation or major cultural and social events. You are then driven back to nearby Mandalay and there is a break for lunch. After lunch you will enjoy a guided visit to the Maha Muni Image. This is the most sacred Pagoda in Upper Myanmar and a treasure trove of Buddhist culture. The main Buddha statue at the temple continuously increases in size as devout Buddhist men place gold leaf on it throughout the day as an offering to Lord Buddha. If you are interested you can take a stop at a gold leaf workshop; these exist only in Mandalay. By now your eyes may be a little weary of all the Gold (paint as well as the actual precious metal) that they have seen in the last couple of days and the next stop is a welcome respite. The Shwenandaw Monastery is a masterpiece of wood carvings that was constructed with wood from the palace of the last Burmese King. The incredible detail of the teak carvings is a must for visitors to Mandalay. Rulers of this kingdom had a legacy of not wasting the teak of structures that became obsolete so they were disassembled and used for other construction. The ancient teak bridge you will visit tomorrow is another example of this exemplary recycling process. Before returning to your hotel you will be driven to the top of Mandalay Hill (located right behind your hotel, from where you can enjoy magnificent sunset views of Mandalay from the ornate temple located at the top. Mar 5th: Mandalay. Start your day at with a visit to the Kuthodaw Pagoda Complex with its 729 stone slabs (housed in separate structures) of Buddha’s scriptures. This impressive complex is known as the world's biggest book. After exploring the complex you will drive about an hour to Saggaing. Upon your arrival at Saggaing you will visit the Dha Kya Di Tar Nunnery, which is one of the largest in the area. Most tours of Myanmar expose you to a number of monasteries that are occupied by monks, but for the average visitor the only time they see the nuns is in glimpses on the streets and at food markets where they collect food donations for their meals. Dha Kya Di Tar is a large complex with many buildings and your guide will give you an introduction of the nunnery and the way of life of the young nuns, some of whom are as little as 6 years old. The lunch process is similar to Amarapura, albeit on a smaller scale, where scores of nuns line up in a slow moving procession for their meal. They chant as they dine, creating a mesmerizing spectacle in their pink robes. After this there is a break for lunch. Saggaing Hill offers a panoramic view of the Irrawaddy River and the hills on the other side. After enjoying the beautiful views you will cross back over the Irrawaddy over the historic AVA Bridge, which was built in 1927 by the British Occupiers and severely damaged during WWII, before being renovated in 1954. Your last stop today offers great photo opportunities. The 160 year old U Bein Bridge is the longest teak bridge in the world. The bridge is always full of locals and tourists, including a lot of Buddhist monks. Enjoy a walk along part or all of the 1.2 kilometer long bridge at sunset. You have the option to board a Sampan, which is a small wooden boat, so that you can cruise along Taung Tha Man Lake and admire the bridge from a short distance. Mar 6th: Mandalay - Yangon. You are assisted with your check-out from your hotel in the morning and driven to the airport, where you are assisted in boarding your morning flight to Yangon. You are greeted at the Yangon airport and then you are driven to Yangon’s downtown where you will enjoy a walking tour in the heart of the capital city, during which you will learn about the history of Yangon and the numerous colonial buildings you will walk by. Attractions during this exploration can include the Indian quarter, Sule Pagoda, City Hall, Independence Monument, Immuel Baptist Church, and the embassy area, although you may want to save some of these for sightseeing on the 3rd. There is a break for lunch (which can be enjoyed at your hotel) after which you are assisted with your check-in at your beautiful historic hotel. The next few day’s plans are briefly reviewed and then you are at leisure to enjoy your gorgeous lodging and its luxurious facilities. Feel free this afternoon to walk around the charming and historic riverfront area around your hotel. In the evening you will enjoy a visit to the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda and its world famous golden stupa. This is Myanmar’s most treasured monument and you can easily spend your morning exploring the various structures. Many ceremonies will be taking place in the various structures of the complex and you will get a chance to observe them. There are hundreds of pilgrims and monks at the monument at any given time. You may also get to observe a class where young Buddhists are taught prayer techniques and/or other aspects of Buddhism. Mar 7th: Yangon. Your guide and chauffeur driven vehicle are available to you from 10 AM until 6 PM and you can schedule the sightseeing, with your guides input, to include some of the attractions that you may have missed on the previous day. During the day you will be driven to Botataung Pagoda. Located on the Yangon water front, this pagoda is where many Yangon residents come to pray. From here you will go to the massive Chauk Htut Gyi Reclining Buddha Image. Of particular interest are the voluminous inscriptions on the soles of the feet of the statue. You will break for lunch at a time of your choice. You will also enjoy a visit to Bogyoke Market. You will be assisted in boarding the Toy train at Darjeeling in the mid-morning. The narrow gauge rail was historically used in India to extend rail service to towns high in the mountains, locally known as hill stations. These tracks required many unique engineering feats and incorporated the highest levels of technology available in their time. The Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway, along with two others (Shimla and Nilgiri), have long possessed UNESCO World Heritage status. Your trip will be a two hour roundtrip journey to Ghoom (elevation 7400 feet) that will obviously include amazing views during the journey as you travel at whiplash inducing speeds of up to 6 miles an hour. There will be two stops along the way, with the first one for 10 minutes at the Batasia Loop, from where you get spectacular views of the Darjeeling Valley, as well as the mighty peaks of the Eastern Himalaya’s, including legendary Kanchenjunga. The next stop is 30 minutes at Ghoom, where there is the small but delightful Ghoom Railway Museum with its exhibits on India’s small gauge steam locomotives. You can also opt to walk around the edges of this small monastic mountain town instead of the museum. Darjeeling produces some of the world’s best tea and, upon your return from Ghoom, you will be driven for a guided exploration of a Tea Estate where you should first enjoy lunch at the premises, and then proceed for the Tea Plantation Exploration.
