Our services begin with your greeting at Kathmandu airport, after which you are driven to your upscale lodging in Kathmandu and assisted with your check-in to your upgraded room with its wonderful view of the Boudanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If your arrival at your hotel is a little before 3pm, an early check-in may be possible, but is not guaranteed. If it is much before 3pm, an additional night’s stay can be added, enabling you to check in at arrival. For most of our South Asian destinations, we recommend a day at leisure upon arrival so as to both recuperate from your international flights, as well as to build a cushion for unexpected flight delays.

With the exception of the fairly congested Kathmandu Valley, Nepal has charming and laid-back cities and towns, along with picturesque wildlife parks that are home to many endangered species.

The unfortunate picture of the effects of the 2015 earthquake as painted by the media, like much of what they do, is severely exaggerated. For example, the three ancient UNESCO World Heritage religious structures in Kathmandu survived with very little or no damage. The three Durbar Square’s (all of which are also individual UNESCO World Heritage Sites) in the queen cities of the Kathmandu Valley did suffer more damage, but most of their monuments are still standing, providing wonderful insights into the local history and culture.

Day 2: Kathmandu. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Hyatt Regency Kathmandu

Weather permitting, you have the option of experiencing an Everest flight early this morning – this is facilitated with private Easy Tours assisted transfers between the hotel and the airport. If you decide to take this flight, on your return you will freshen up and have breakfast. If weather conditions result in the flight getting cancelled, it can be substituted for the following day.

Today and tomorrow are days with amazing experiences and photo opportunities at six UNESCO sites and other interesting places. Begin your day with a tour of Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world. Originally built around 2400 years ago, the spectacular temple was reconstructed by a Nepalese king in the 15th century after the original wooden structure was (purportedly) consumed by termites. A lesser-known fact among western visitors is that Nepal’s natives are primarily Hindus (over 80%), and Pashupatinath’s surrounding area is dotted with ancient Hindu shrines and ashrams, as well as a steady stream of pilgrims and worshippers.

Nepal’s holy river Bagmati flows through here and its banks are constant witnesses to Hindu ceremonies for the dead and the living. There is a cremation area where pyres are always present, and your Guide will ask you for a mindful approach in these areas. The main temple and most of the surrounding shrines received no damage in the 2015 earthquake.

Next you are driven to the Kathmandu Durbar Square, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. A few of the ancient monuments here were damaged during the earthquake, but much of it remains intact. The monuments in the Square were built between the 12th and 18th centuries, and this is where, even today, most of the state ceremonies are performed. Start with a visit to the beautiful 17th Century three-story building called Kumari Ghar, which means the abode of the Living Goddess. Guests may want to spend a couple of minutes researching this ancient tradition before their visit. If you are fortunate, you may be graced with the anointed child’s appearance in an upstairs window. You will then explore the ancient square and its many monuments, with the opportunity to pose in front of Kal Bhairav, an ancient and impressive stone relief of Lord Shiva in one of his most fearsome manifestations.

You will break for lunch and then visit the Swayambhunath Temple and Pagoda, Kathmandu’s signature monument, with the expressive eyes and nose painted on all four sides of its unique crown that are visible from almost all the Kathmandu Valley.

Devout Nepalese walk up the hill from the base (365 steps), but most of our guests prefer to drive up almost all the way up and then use the few steps on the other side of the hill. Although a couple of the smaller surrounding monuments were damaged during the 2015 earthquake, the main structure still stands, along with other smaller shrines and monasteries surrounding it.

Your last experience today is the Boudhanath Stupa near your hotel, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that also happens to be one of Kathmandu’s two landmarks. This is the largest stupa in Nepal and a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. Said to have been built just after Lord Buddha’s departure from the world about two and a half millennia ago, the stupa has multiple legends associated with it in both Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhism. The influx of Tibetan Buddhists escaping China’s control over the last six decades has transformed the area around it as many of them have settled here, and have also built over 50 Gompa’s (monasteries) around the Stupa. Exploring the stupa and its colorful surrounding areas is a highlight for any visitor to Kathmandu.

Day 3: Kathmandu – Nagarkot. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Hotel Mystic Mountain

You are assisted with your checkout in the mid-morning and driven to Patan City, one of the three queen cities of the valley. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, although some structures here were damaged or destroyed by the 2015 earthquake, much of the amazing historic site remains, and is more than well worth a visit. Patan is the city of fine arts, and you will start with an exploration of the Durbar Square. The museum here houses a collection of ancient bronzes and religious objects. Other noteworthy monuments are the impressive carvings at the 17th century Krishna Mandir and Mahavihar, and the 12th century Golden Temple of Lord Buddha.

From here you will proceed to Bhaktapur, a UNESCO world Heritage Site, for a guided exploration. Bhaktapur lies on the way between Kathmandu and Nagarkot and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the Kathmandu Valley’s three queen cities, and its name translates as The City of Devotees. Although this queen city suffered more damage than the two others during the earthquake, there is more than enough remaining to marvel at as you walk around the ancient square with its unique architecture and charming temples.

There is a break for lunch after which you will be driven to Nagarkot, which is located east of Kathmandu. Nagarkot is situated at an elevation of 7135 feet (2175 meters) and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas. On a very clear morning you can see five of the world's ten highest mountains - Everest 29,028 feet (8848 meters), Lhotse 27939 feet (8516 meters), Makalu 27,765 feet (8463 meters) and Manaslu 26,781 feet (8163 meters), as well as many other summits.

You are assisted with your check-in at the Mountain Resort on your arrival at Nagarkot. Your room will have a large balcony with a direct view of the Himalayas. We recommend that you turn in early this evening. Please note that the best time for good visibility of the distant Himalayas is at sunrise.

Day 4: Nagarkot – Kathmandu – Delhi. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – The Oberoi New Delhi

Awaken before sunrise in the morning so that you can take in the amazing vista of the Himalayas. Besides your balcony, there are various other locations at the resort that provide great Himalayan views. After breakfast you are driven to a nearby location from where you will proceed on a short easy hike to a fascinating Tamang Village. You will experience a refreshing hike through pine forests full of Himalayan birds and small wildlife, as well as terraced farmlands cultivating mountain vegetables and more.

The Tamang are mountain folks who moved from Tibet to Nepal and India over the last few centuries. Traditionally horse traders, the Tamang have kept their language, Buddhist beliefs and culture, as well as their traditional dress. They are friendly to visitors and their villages are often a part of much more arduous trekking journeys in Nepal. You will experience how these simple mountain people sustain themselves and go about their day-to-day activities.

After the hike you will return to your resort to freshen up. You are assisted with your check-out around noon, and then there is a break for lunch at your resort, after which you are driven to Kathmandu Airport. At the airport you are assisted with your check-in for your late afternoon flight to Delhi. This flight often offers great views of the higher Himalayan Ranges as you depart from Nepal. Upon arrival at Delhi your Small Group India tour itinerary will commence.

From here you will drive to historic Old Delhi. While exploring North India, you will repeatedly experience awe as you experience some of the achievements of one of our planet’s greatest ruling dynasties ever – India’s legendary Mughal Empire. You will visit three of their most famous attractions, the UNESCO Forted Cities at Delhi and Agra, and the Taj Mahal. But a lot more of what you will experience at Delhi and Agra, as well in Rajasthan, will have originated under the kingdom’s influence. The Mughal’s also left behind unique cuisine, uncountable other monuments, bazaars, and a lot more, many of which you will experience during your exploration.

Start your discovery of Old Delhi at the awe-inspiring Red Fort. The great city inside the massive sandstone walls of the Red Fort offers visitors a large number of architectural and historical attractions. The Red Fort was the seat of the Mughal Empire for more than two hundred and fifty years and is obviously a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an amazing example of a blend of Persian, Indian and European architecture. Both this fortified city and the Jama Masjid (that you will visit later today) were built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor who created the Taj Mahal.

After this you will drive close by for lunch at the historic Curzon Room in the century old Maidens Hotel.

One of your most enduring memories of India will be your next experience as you walk through the ancient (from the time of the Mughals) Chandni Chowk Bazaar, home to the world’s largest spice market. The cacophony of sounds which have echoed through the centuries, the cries of hawkers and the animated bargaining, along with the incredible colors and the diverse smells emanating from the street food stalls and spice markets combine to make for an experience that is unique to this ancient bazaar.

The Masjid is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture and is constructed of red sandstone and white marble. It is an active place of worship and its courtyard can hold 25,000 worshippers. Bare legs and shoulders are not permitted inside the mosque and we include rented sarongs and scarves. After exploring the mosque, you will avoid the worst of Delhi’s rush hour on the drive back to your hotel.

Day 6: Delhi. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – The Oberoi New Delhi

Continue your exploration of New Delhi with a drive to the awe-inspiring 12th century Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Delhi has over 500 ancient structures strewn over its vast expanse, with many of them in various states of disrepair. For mankind’s achievements from about a millennium ago, the Qutab Minar is unmatched in its architectural brilliance and longevity.

This 240 ft tall medieval tower is a symbol of victory and a spectacular example of Persian architecture, with intricate carvings and gorgeous inlaid calligraphy.

Within the Qutab complex, amidst the ruins of the Quwat-ul-Islam Mosque, stands the legendary 2500-year-old Iron Pillar. The pillar stands 23 feet and 8 inches tall, weighs about 7000 pounds, and has inscriptions that are still legible to a great extent. This massive cast iron structure is said to have been moved from its distant cave shelter to Delhi around the 12th century.

From here you will proceed for a drive through some of Lutyens’ historic New Delhi. Your drive will take you through Delhi’s Diplomatic Enclave on tree lined avenues surrounded by embassies of the world’s major nations.

From here you can also enjoy a striking view of the India Gate at the other end of majestic and historic Rajpath, the former Kingsway.

After a very short drive on Rajpath you will arrive at the India Gate, a War Memorial to the 84,000 British Indian Army soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War, and Indian casualties in other wars. You will learn a little about the magnificent structure, which is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. From here you will be driven through a section of Connaught Place, which is New Delhi’s downtown and still retains its colonial architecture and design. Lunch will be at a fine-dining restaurant in Connaught Place, with options between multiple cuisines.

Next comes the nearby Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, which is a large gold domed Sikh House of Worship and is the most prominent Gurudwara in Delhi. It was first built as a small structure in 1783 and then expanded over the next few decades. The campus includes the temple, a kitchen, a school, an art gallery, and the Sarovar (Holy Tank) whose water is called Amrit (Holy Nectar). As with all Sikh Gurudwaras, volunteers, including children and the elderly, the extremely wealthy and not so well-off perform almost all the chores required to keep the Gurudwara functioning. A fascinating part of this is the daily langar (community meal), and you will witness as thousands of meals are served to all visitors who want one, regardless of race, religion, gender or belief. Only vegetarian food is served, so that no religions dietary restrictions are violated.

Continue your exploration of Delhi with a visit to the beautiful Lodi Gardens. This massive garden complex is spread over 90 acres of priceless real estate in the heart of Delhi, and contains the tombs of various rulers of the Pashtun Dynasty that ruled much of Northern India during the 16th century. There are lush lawns and a plethora of flowers and plants mixed in with all the monuments.

Very near the gardens is the Lodi Art District, your last destination before returning to your hotel. Delhi isn’t famous for its street art and murals, and the large amount of street art found all over this upscale part of the city will both surprise and delight you. The subject matter ranges from quirky to distinctly ethnic Indian and there will be surprises around every corner. Day 7: Delhi – Varanasi. (Breakfast and in-Flight Lunch)        Overnight – Taj Nadesar Palace

In the mid-morning you driven to the airport and assisted with boarding your early afternoon flight to Varanasi on India’s best full-service airline – lunch (decent for an airline meal) will be served during the flight. Upon landing you will be driven to your exquisite Palace Hotel. This is the only true luxury lodging in Varanasi and calling the small Nadesar Palace ‘boutique’ is a vast understatement. Built by the East India Company in the 18th century, it was taken over by the local Royal Family in the late 19th Century and served as a guest house for British and other Royalty during their visits to India. It is the centerpiece of a very large campus of gardens and organic farmland, and, time permitting, you can reserve an exploration on the Royal Family’s horse drawn carriage.

India’s holiest city is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited city on our planet with a history that dates back five millennia. The truly ancient part of the city, Kashi, is what this applies to. Among many other things, Hindu’s believe that being cremated here can free their soul from the cycle of death and rebirth. We will not try to go into details about this amazing destination, you will be introduced to some of this destination’s highlights. Benares is also home to some of our planet’s best handloomed silk and well-off Indians visit this destination just to purchase silk garments for special occasions such as weddings and other life events.

Day 8: Varanasi. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Taj Nadesar Palace

Two of the highlights of your time in Varanasi are the sunset and sunrise cruises on the Ganga. After a pre-dawn hot beverage and cookies, join your guide for a visit to the Ghats. It is a surreal experience to arrive at the Ghats just before dawn and witness the eons old scene - the most devout Hindu’s are waiting at the holiest Ghats to greet the rising sun as they immerse themselves in the Ganga, while others on the wide riverbank steps meditate and practice yoga. 

During your boat ride you will experience a private live performance of the wonderful sounds of traditional Benares Gharana, an ancient form of music incorporating the tabla and the sitar. The ambiance created by your surroundings and the traditional Benares music has to be experienced to be believed.

Return to your palace to have breakfast, and then you are at leisure until noon, when you will enjoy lunch at the highly rated Chowk Restaurant at the Taj Ganges Hotel next door. After lunch you are driven to a spot near the Holy River from where you will be escorted through a crowded bazaar catering to visiting pilgrims. Arrive at the ghats and commence a walk on the banks of the Ganga. This is a great opportunity to experience some of Hinduisms ancient and iconic rituals. Various rituals will be taking place on the Ghats. Such ceremonies include, but are not limited to, rituals where devout Hindu’s are getting their heads shaved in respect to a recently diseased parent, newly married couples are praying with a priest for blessings, while nearby another Brahmin priest orchestrates the naming ceremony of a newborn.

Your walk will end with you being assisted in boarding your boat for a cruise along the river to view its evening activities as you cruise and observe all the rituals and prayers, including the main cremation Ghat where the deceased are burned on wooden pyres in what is considered the holiest site for their earthly remains to depart from this world so that their souls can achieve salvation.

The Ghats on the holy river’s banks stretch for a few miles and are always full of activity, but the middle of the whole expanse is where the holiest Ghats are located and where the main evening ceremony takes place. You can float your own lamps from your boat while you watch the ancient prayer and oil lamp ceremony at sunset. Your boat enables you to enjoy a great view of the ceremony and hundreds of lamps as they float down the holy river. After this you are assisted with your disembarkation at an outer bank of the river.

Day 9: Varanasi – Khajuraho/Panna. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Tendu Leaf Jungle Resort

Head to nearby Sarnath after checking out in the mid-morning. Sarnath is a Buddhism pilgrimage site that is on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage List. Attractions in this holy rural area include the massive 2300-year-old Dhamekha Stupa located near where the Buddha preached his first sermons. This Stupa was constructed by Emperor Ashoka, who is credited with the spread of Buddhism in the world. Sarnath was also where the first Buddhist Sangha (Community of Buddhist Monks) was formed, and the area is home to a number of other ancient Buddhist monuments that you will drive by. A highlight of the visit to Sarnath is a brief stop at the very small Archaeological Museum with its impressive collection of artifacts, which include the spectacular 4 headed lion that is India’s national emblem.

After your exploration you will break for a late lunch as you approach the airport. Dine at the upscale Tree of Life Resort’s wonderful restaurant, AnnTripti, which serves highly rated fresh Indian and western cuisine. After lunch you are driven to the airport and assisted in boarding your short no-frills late afternoon flight to Khajuraho. Arrive at Khajuraho Airport and you driven to your beautiful nature resort, located on the banks of the Ken River. Nature is the key attraction here and your lodging is surrounded by striking jungle scenery, an exotic array of flora and fauna, and one of India’s premier tiger sanctuaries. Dinners are included at your resort during your stay here.

Day 10: Khajuraho/Panna. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Tendu Leaf Jungle Resort

In the early morning you will experience a jeep safari in the forested hills of Panna Tiger Reserve.

A few tigers were relocated from other sanctuaries, and these tigers mated and had their first cubs in 2010, and in the short time since then the number of big cats has multiplied to around 70 roaming around the 210 square mile reserve.

The reserve now offers among the best chances of seeing the magnificent cats. There is a plethora of other wildlife, including a lot of crocodiles, and the occasional elusive leopard. The rugged landscape is interspersed with gorges and waterfalls, and there is a plethora of birdlife, both migratory and indigenous. You will traverse the dirt roads and pathways of the park for about 3 hours before returning to your jungle resort for breakfast.

In the late morning you will drive to the nearby small town of Khajuraho and enjoy lunch at an upscale hotel before the highlights of this excursion. After lunch you will experience the awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. These magnificent examples of Hindu religious art were constructed between 900 and 1400 years ago, and are sometimes referred to as the Kama Sutra Temples. Roughly twenty thousand extremely detailed stone sculptures adorn the facades of these temples, and about 10% of the sculptures portray very explicit erotic scenes. The sophisticated design and building techniques that were used in the creation of these temples and the detailed artistry of the sculptures cannot be described in words – you have to experience them personally to grasp their impact.

This late afternoon you will experience a cruise on the Ken River as it winds through the picturesque Panna Tiger Reserve Region. Besides frequent sighting of wildlife and exotic species of waterfowl, the colors of rocks (granite, dolomite, and quartz) on the surrounding gorges make this for a fascinating hour-long experience. Return to your resort as the sun starts to set on the river and its surroundings, creating a perfect ending for a day full of unique experiences. Dinner is included at your jungle resort this evening.

Day 11: Khajuraho/Panna – Orchha – Agra. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – IHCL Tajview Hotel by Taj Hotels

After a slightly early breakfast, you will enjoy a scenic road journey that goes by sweeping pastoral regions and small villages. Arrive at Orchha and there is a break for lunch. After lunch you will experience a brief exploration of some of Orchha’s archeological treasures, built by the local Hindu kings in the 15th and 16th Centuries.

After this exploration you are driven about 20 minutes to the Jhansi Railway Station. An Indian railway station is an experience an itself, always abuzz with activity as India’s vast masses travel on the world’s largest rail network. Although the stations premises are not particularly sanitary, your train and your compartment are very clean and the best that India has to offer on its passenger trains. Your seats are in the best compartment of the train, with comfortable and wide reclining seats, and great views of the rural countryside and small towns that you will pass on the 2.5-hour journey.

Your guide assists you in getting seated in your assigned seats and gets your luggage ported to the appropriate location above your seats. Refreshments are served by Indian Railways during this journey - we recommend that you refrain from consuming these (except for the bottled water). Upon your arrival at Agra Station, you are driven to your hotel. At this moderately upscale hotel, you will stay in recently renovated larger rooms that offer some of Agra’s best Taj Mahal Views.

Day 12: Agra - Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Sawai Man Mahal

Enjoy a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal. Morning is the best time to experience it in terms of crowds - it is more expensive for Indian tourists to enter at this early hour and so the massive monument and its surrounding Mughal gardens have a lot fewer visitors than the rest of the day.

Return to your hotel in time for breakfast and to prepare for the day’s journey, after which you will proceed to the first red sandstone fort of North India, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agra Fort. This Forted City was completed in 1565 by India’s greatest Mughal ruler, Emperor Akbar, and almost everything here was later copied in Delhi’s larger Red Fort. Its royal audience halls, immense stone courtyards, marble mosque and the private royal chambers give us a glimpse of the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. There are unique views of the Taj Mahal from a section of the fort, including the room where the Taj Mahal’s creator, Emperor Shah Jahan, was imprisoned during the later years of his life by his infamous son and successor, Aurangzeb.

After exploring the fort you are driven to the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, located just off the highway to Jaipur. The massive 10th century Chand Baori Stepwell is one of the most impressive in all of India and is located next to a charming Rajasthani village. The depth of the stepwell is that of a modern 7 story building, and there are stairs (no longer accessible to visitors) leading down to the bottom from three of the 100 foot plus wide (35 meters) sides, creating symmetry and beauty to the ancient structure.

You will proceed nearby to a rural resort which serves farm fresh organic and all-natural produce, as well as pasture raised chicken and lamb in its restaurant. After lunch you will continue on with your journey to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Jaipur, where you will check-in to your beautiful palace hotel. Among the many attractions of your lodging are beautiful hand carved Thikri Panels, Rajasthani murals and vintage photographs, as well as carefully preserved artifacts such as the incredible 187 year old gilded doorway of the Rambagh Palace. The sprawling lush palace grounds are a haven for birdlife, especially the scores of peacocks who are often found performing their amazing dance. You are in the center of historic Jaipur, and most of your sightseeing is fairly easy to reach despite the city’s bustling traffic.

Day 13: Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Sawai Man Mahal

Begin your exploration of the walled pink city of Jaipur. You will start with a stroll through the fascinating main bazaar in the heart of the pink city and watch the locals as they shop for pretty much everything a consumer can possibly want. This atmospheric and crowded bazaar has street sellers of vegetables, fruit and other goods occupying the curbs with their displays. There are stores selling spices, nuts, flowers, toys, footwear, hardware, and a lot more, mixed in with street food vendors and brick and mortar eating establishments. Byzantine alleys lead into inner courtyard shops.

After a few minutes of walking, you will arrive at the most photographed of Jaipur’s monuments, the enchanting Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Wind).

Jaipur is India’s capital for jewelery, and the largest supplier of exquisitely crafted jewelery to much of the world, and Johri Bazaar (jewelers’ market) is a historic enclave that happens to be the center of the largest precious stone cutting area on our planet. You will experience a short walk through a section of the area (please note that all the jewelry manufacturers are located on higher floors and so you will not be seeing the jewelers at work) and soon arrive at a small boutique hotel, The Johri. This five-room luxury inn is home an excellent restaurant where you will enjoy lunch. Locally sourced fresh organic vegetarian cuisine is served here, and you will order ala carte from their menu of seasonal and regional offerings. We strongly recommend all their chaat and appetizer items, but their main entrees are not to be missed either.

After lunch you will proceed for a visit to the Jantar Mantar (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a fascinating stone observatory built in 1728. Among other instruments, it includes a massive stone sun dial that is accurate to within 2 seconds. Located next to Jantar Mantar is the City Palace, the royal residence that was built in a delightful blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. A part of this massive complex is still occupied by the Royal family and is not accessible to the public. Your Tour Director will regale you with stories of royalty as you admire their trappings. This immense complex also houses a number of museums that include displays of armor, miniature paintings, and a large and impressive collection of ancient royal garments and accoutrements.

Day 14: Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Sawai Man Mahal

Today will start with three of Jaipur’s off the beaten tourism track historical destinations, which also happen to be among the most wonderful opportunities for photography in India. First you are driven to a very scenic location in Jaipur adjacent to a public park, The Albert Hall Museum, which was completed in 1887 by the architect Samuel Swinton Jacob. You won’t enter the museum as this stop is solely for you to walk around and take-in the absolutely gorgeous Indo-Saracenic architecture. Rudyard Kipling (himself the son of a museum curator) on a visit was so impressed that he wrote "it is now a rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards".

From here you are driven to the ancient Hindu pilgrimage site of Galtaji, located in a crevice in the Aravalli Hills. This 15th century complex of temples here is sometimes referred to as the Monkey Temple by tourists because a large tribe of monkeys lives here and believes they own the complex. The picturesque complex of temples has seven ponds that are fed by springs on the surrounding hilltops, and Hindu pilgrims consider taking a dip in these to be purifying. The beautiful temple complex has been a retreat for a sect of Hindu ascetics since the 16th century.

The monkeys agree and swim around the main pond with reckless abandon, and many of them can be seen diving into the tank from various vantage points.

Monkeys are everywhere, and they are obviously in-charge! For someone not used to their social behavior and grooming rituals, observing them can be fascinating.

From here you will be driven to Jaipur’s best kept secret, the royal cenotaphs known as Gaitore ki Chhatriyan. By now you will have seen many examples of Chhatri’s (ornate umbrella shaped domes), but those that cover the individual tombs and structures here are a sight to behold, and an incredible Instagram opportunity. In a city full of UNESCO Sites and incredible colors, this complex is sometimes our guests’ favorite memory of Jaipur. Although you are still in today’s Jaipur, this spots serenity and scenery is a surprising break from the crowds and noise. The complex was first used in 1733 AD for a tomb that marked the cremation site for Jaipur’s Rajas. Although each of the smaller structures is worth a detailed exploration, the highlight is the large intricately carved white marble cenotaph of Jaipur’s founder, the legendary Maharaja Sawai Jai Singhji.

On the way to your next destination, you will stop for lunch at the excellent restaurant at your hotel as it lies on the way.

This complex was completed in 1599 AD after 25 years of construction. You will be driven to the back entrance as Easy Tours does not offer elephant-back ascents up the ramparts of the complex. The massive forted city inside the complex is one of India’s finest examples of Rajput architecture. You will explore the gorgeous chambers and hallways, which are famous for their exquisite designs and handcrafted embellishments. Your Guide will regale you with the history of the various structures as you take in the amazing workmanship of the craftsmen who created them.

You will return to your palace hotel in the mid-afternoon, and those who are interested have the option of a shopping stop along the way. Guests who are not interested will continue on and enjoy their palace’s facilities in the late afternoon. Jaipur is India’s shopping mecca for all sorts of exquisite hand-crafted items, fabrics, carpets, as well as jewelery. If some guests choose this stop, your guide will accompany you and your vehicle will return shortly to pick you up for the drive back to the palace.

Day 15: Jaipur – Narlai. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Rawla Narlai

After a slightly early breakfast you are driven to historic Rawla Narlai, a 17th century Royal Lodge located right in the middle of a wonderful and authentic ancient village. Rawla means Royal Palace, Narlai is the name of the village. Much of the so-called rural tourism offered in Rajasthan is of smaller villages that receive a constant stream of visitors and most of their guest experiences are, at least partially, staged.

The ancient royal lodge has been meticulously restored by its owners, the Royal Family of Jodhpur, and calling it boutique would be a vast understatement. There are two wings – one being the original 17th Century hunting lodge, and a more modern wing that was built around two decades ago. Near the lodge and visible from various vantage points is a massive ancient volcanic granite boulder called Elephant Hill, with a historic small Hindu Temple at its peak, and many caves carved into its facade.

Please note although that the lodge rooms in the new wing are larger and have more modern conveniences and more natural light, we recommend the rooms in the ancient wing as their incredible historical charm is a unique experience not found elsewhere. However, if you prefer natural light and/or modern conveniences, we recommend the new wing. Rooms in both wings have upscale traditional Rajasthani artwork, furnishings and décor, and the heritage wing rooms obviously have more antiques. If you choose the new wing, you will still experience a lot of the 17th Century lodge’s original features. You will select your room preference soon after your tour reservation.

The cuisine served at the lodge wins accolades from everyone who stays here, and most of it is sourced from their own organic farms and orchards, as well as other farms surrounding the village. The chefs are attentive and will customize your meals to your preferences, and just like in every resort that you will stay in while in Rajasthan, there are live local cultural performances every evening. The lodge also offers exceptional service levels – nothing is too much for the staff.

Ancient Stepwell Magical Dinner Experience: After sunset you will be assisted in climbing aboard traditional bullock carts and transported through the dark countryside to a charming 16th Century stepwell. Your magical dinner will be at the stepwell, accompanied by live local folk music and accented by hundreds of oil lamps adorning the steps of the stepwell. As you enjoy a multi-course dinner of local delicacies and the lodge’s attentive service, the oil lamps and countless stars will illuminate this amazing night.

Day 16: Narlai – Udaipur. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Vatsalya Vihar

Guests can select one of two activities for the early morning today, or choose to relax and sleep in. Couples and family/friends can temporarily separate to enjoy one or the other. You will need to select your preference soon after finalizing your reservations.

The first option is to accompany one of the lodge stewards (they do this daily) up the 756 ancient hand carved steps that lead to the peak of Elephant Hill where you can enjoy the spectacular views and visit the small Hindu Temple. Your lodge steward will carry a hot beverage and snacks for your refreshment at the top of the boulder.

Sightings of tigers at India’s better National Parks are much more frequent than leopards, but leopard sightings are fairly common around Narlai, which is not a National Park. At the least you will enjoy an adventure into small rural communities and the jungle – 88% of our guests have had one or more leopard sightings during this adventure. The ride is bumpy as you are traversing rough terrain.

In both cases you will return to the lodge to have a late delicious breakfast and then you can enjoy your fascinating surroundings for a little while. You will check out just before noon and, proceed on the drive to Udaipur, with a short diversion for a fascinating stop. A very short drive will bring you to one of India’s least known architectural marvels, the 15th Century Ranakpur Jain Temple, which also happens to be an active place of worship.

Explore the awe-inspiring marble temple complex. The main temple’s twenty-nine halls are supported by fourteen hundred and forty-four massive yet intricately carved marble pillars, and no two are of the same design. There is an abundance of intricate sculptures and friezes and the enormous scale of the monument and the exquisite details of its design have to be experienced to be believed.

You will break for lunch after exploring the temple complex. After lunch you will continue on with your journey to Udaipur. This is one of the most picturesque drives in all of India. As you go through the Aravalli hills there will be photo opportunities of village life and livestock, including many camels. The rolling landscape and the charm of the local villages and their colorful inhabitants will fascinate you during this 2-to-2.5-hour journey. Arrive at your beautiful boutique nature resort, located very near the town of Udaipur, in the late afternoon and you are assisted with check-in.

Staying at this resort is one of our guests’ favorite experiences while in India. There are only 7 large upscale villas and suites in the 9+ acre campus, and you are surrounded by gorgeous gardens and the resort’s organic farm and orchards, from which you can pick your meal ingredients while opting for Indian or western cuisine. The orchard has a plethora of fruit trees, an olive garden, and a lot more. Service is exemplary, and matches the wonderful fresh ala-carte cuisine served here.

This morning you are driven to visit the Monsoon Palace, a small hilltop structure that offers amazing views of the picturesque city of Udaipur and its lakes and palaces. The journey up the hill takes you through a protected wildlife sanctuary and occasional small wildlife sightings can be experienced. After a few minutes exploring the historical structure, you will experience the spectacular view of the lakes and palaces of Udaipur, set picturesquely amidst the Aravalli Mountain range. Next up is an easy and delightful walk in the picturesque city. With its small-town atmosphere, laid back Udaipur is one of India’s best places to explore on foot, and your guide will take you for walks in small local bazaars and other interesting parts of this charming city. A brief stop during the walk will be at a gallery where accomplished local artists create Udaipur’s famous and fascinating miniature paintings. You will also enjoy a slightly bumpy (there are no shock absorbers) three-wheeler scooter ride to your destination for lunch, which will be at the lakefront Sunset Terrace restaurant at the entrance of the massive City Palace Complex.

After lunch you will enter the fabled City Palace Complex which contains multiple old palaces and other structures. You will explore beautifully decorated rooms with thousands of exquisitely sculpted mirrors covering the walls, massive ivory doors (a dark reminder of Indian royalty’s passion for hunting), brightly colored stained-glass windows, expansive inlaid marble balconies, and the unique peacock courtyard. There are amazing views to be had from this structure, especially of Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace, and Jag Mandir Island. Enjoy a tour of the amazing Crystal Gallery which houses the world’s largest collection of priceless crystal. Marvel at pieces like the complete bedroom furniture set in crystal and the gorgeous crystal fountains in the courtyards.

After exploring the complex you will proceed to the palace jetty and board your boat for a private cruise on captivating Lake Pichola to enjoy wonderful views of Lake Pichola and magical Udaipur. Disembark from your cruise and you are escorted back to your wonderful resort.

Day 18: Udaipur – Delhi – International Flight. (Brunch)

Cooking Class & Special Brunch Experience: Enjoy your last morning at your nature resort before you are assisted with your checkout around noon. Your gracious hostess at the resort is also an accomplished chef, and she and the other great cooks in her kitchen will prepare a very special meal for you this morning. You will be asked for your preferences on the previous day and you are invited to participate in the preparations for this meal, including picking fresh herbs and produce from the resorts organic farm.

After brunch you are driven to the airport (located well outside the city) and assisted in boarding your mid-afternoon flight to Delhi. Your flight in on India’s best full-service airline and, if the flight is on-time, it will be a little after 5pm by the time you collect your baggage at the domestic arrival section. All international flights depart from the international departure area of the same terminal. Please note that almost all international flights depart from India’s airports either very late at night or early in the morning.

Your assigned Easy Tours’ Guest Relations Manager will make further recommendations based on your international flight details, once you provide us with that information. Any additional services, such as a one-night hotel stay, will be suggested based on those details.

Day 1: Arrive at Kathmandu, Nepal.        Overnight – Hyatt Regency Kathmandu

Our services begin with your greeting at Kathmandu airport, after which you are driven to your upscale lodging in Kathmandu and assisted with your check-in to your upgraded room with its wonderful view of the Boudanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If your arrival at your hotel is a little before 3pm, an early check-in may be possible, but is not guaranteed. If it is much before 3pm, an additional night’s stay can be added, enabling you to check in at arrival. For most of our South Asian destinations, we recommend a day at leisure upon arrival so as to both recuperate from your international flights, as well as to build a cushion for unexpected flight delays.

With the exception of the fairly congested Kathmandu Valley, Nepal has charming and laid-back cities and towns, along with picturesque wildlife parks that are home to many endangered species.

The unfortunate picture of the effects of the 2015 earthquake as painted by the media, like much of what they do, is severely exaggerated. For example, the three ancient UNESCO World Heritage religious structures in Kathmandu survived with very little or no damage. The three Durbar Square’s (all of which are also individual UNESCO World Heritage Sites) in the queen cities of the Kathmandu Valley did suffer more damage, but most of their monuments are still standing, providing wonderful insights into the local history and culture.

Day 2: Kathmandu. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Hyatt Regency Kathmandu

Weather permitting, you have the option of experiencing an Everest flight early this morning – this is facilitated with private Easy Tours assisted transfers between the hotel and the airport. If you decide to take this flight, on your return you will freshen up and have breakfast. If weather conditions result in the flight getting cancelled, it can be substituted for the following day.

Today and tomorrow are days with amazing experiences and photo opportunities at six UNESCO sites and other interesting places. Begin your day with a tour of Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world. Originally built around 2400 years ago, the spectacular temple was reconstructed by a Nepalese king in the 15th century after the original wooden structure was (purportedly) consumed by termites. A lesser-known fact among western visitors is that Nepal’s natives are primarily Hindus (over 80%), and Pashupatinath’s surrounding area is dotted with ancient Hindu shrines and ashrams, as well as a steady stream of pilgrims and worshippers.

Nepal’s holy river Bagmati flows through here and its banks are constant witnesses to Hindu ceremonies for the dead and the living. There is a cremation area where pyres are always present, and your Guide will ask you for a mindful approach in these areas. The main temple and most of the surrounding shrines received no damage in the 2015 earthquake.

Next you are driven to the Kathmandu Durbar Square, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. A few of the ancient monuments here were damaged during the earthquake, but much of it remains intact. The monuments in the Square were built between the 12th and 18th centuries, and this is where, even today, most of the state ceremonies are performed. Start with a visit to the beautiful 17th Century three-story building called Kumari Ghar, which means the abode of the Living Goddess. Guests may want to spend a couple of minutes researching this ancient tradition before their visit. If you are fortunate, you may be graced with the anointed child’s appearance in an upstairs window. You will then explore the ancient square and its many monuments, with the opportunity to pose in front of Kal Bhairav, an ancient and impressive stone relief of Lord Shiva in one of his most fearsome manifestations.

You will break for lunch and then visit the Swayambhunath Temple and Pagoda, Kathmandu’s signature monument, with the expressive eyes and nose painted on all four sides of its unique crown that are visible from almost all the Kathmandu Valley.

Devout Nepalese walk up the hill from the base (365 steps), but most of our guests prefer to drive up almost all the way up and then use the few steps on the other side of the hill. Although a couple of the smaller surrounding monuments were damaged during the 2015 earthquake, the main structure still stands, along with other smaller shrines and monasteries surrounding it.

Your last experience today is the Boudhanath Stupa near your hotel, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that also happens to be one of Kathmandu’s two landmarks. This is the largest stupa in Nepal and a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. Said to have been built just after Lord Buddha’s departure from the world about two and a half millennia ago, the stupa has multiple legends associated with it in both Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhism. The influx of Tibetan Buddhists escaping China’s control over the last six decades has transformed the area around it as many of them have settled here, and have also built over 50 Gompa’s (monasteries) around the Stupa. Exploring the stupa and its colorful surrounding areas is a highlight for any visitor to Kathmandu.

Day 3: Kathmandu – Nagarkot. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Hotel Mystic Mountain

You are assisted with your checkout in the mid-morning and driven to Patan City, one of the three queen cities of the valley. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, although some structures here were damaged or destroyed by the 2015 earthquake, much of the amazing historic site remains, and is more than well worth a visit. Patan is the city of fine arts, and you will start with an exploration of the Durbar Square. The museum here houses a collection of ancient bronzes and religious objects. Other noteworthy monuments are the impressive carvings at the 17th century Krishna Mandir and Mahavihar, and the 12th century Golden Temple of Lord Buddha.

From here you will proceed to Bhaktapur, a UNESCO world Heritage Site, for a guided exploration. Bhaktapur lies on the way between Kathmandu and Nagarkot and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the Kathmandu Valley’s three queen cities, and its name translates as The City of Devotees. Although this queen city suffered more damage than the two others during the earthquake, there is more than enough remaining to marvel at as you walk around the ancient square with its unique architecture and charming temples.

There is a break for lunch after which you will be driven to Nagarkot, which is located east of Kathmandu. Nagarkot is situated at an elevation of 7135 feet (2175 meters) and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas. On a very clear morning you can see five of the world's ten highest mountains - Everest 29,028 feet (8848 meters), Lhotse 27939 feet (8516 meters), Makalu 27,765 feet (8463 meters) and Manaslu 26,781 feet (8163 meters), as well as many other summits.

You are assisted with your check-in at the Mountain Resort on your arrival at Nagarkot. Your room will have a large balcony with a direct view of the Himalayas. We recommend that you turn in early this evening. Please note that the best time for good visibility of the distant Himalayas is at sunrise.

Day 4: Nagarkot – Kathmandu – Delhi. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – The Oberoi New Delhi

Awaken before sunrise in the morning so that you can take in the amazing vista of the Himalayas. Besides your balcony, there are various other locations at the resort that provide great Himalayan views. After breakfast you are driven to a nearby location from where you will proceed on a short easy hike to a fascinating Tamang Village. You will experience a refreshing hike through pine forests full of Himalayan birds and small wildlife, as well as terraced farmlands cultivating mountain vegetables and more.

The Tamang are mountain folks who moved from Tibet to Nepal and India over the last few centuries. Traditionally horse traders, the Tamang have kept their language, Buddhist beliefs and culture, as well as their traditional dress. They are friendly to visitors and their villages are often a part of much more arduous trekking journeys in Nepal. You will experience how these simple mountain people sustain themselves and go about their day-to-day activities.

After the hike you will return to your resort to freshen up. You are assisted with your check-out around noon, and then there is a break for lunch at your resort, after which you are driven to Kathmandu Airport. At the airport you are assisted with your check-in for your late afternoon flight to Delhi. This flight often offers great views of the higher Himalayan Ranges as you depart from Nepal. Upon arrival at Delhi your Small Group India tour itinerary will commence.

From here you will drive to historic Old Delhi. While exploring North India, you will repeatedly experience awe as you experience some of the achievements of one of our planet’s greatest ruling dynasties ever – India’s legendary Mughal Empire. You will visit three of their most famous attractions, the UNESCO Forted Cities at Delhi and Agra, and the Taj Mahal. But a lot more of what you will experience at Delhi and Agra, as well in Rajasthan, will have originated under the kingdom’s influence. The Mughal’s also left behind unique cuisine, uncountable other monuments, bazaars, and a lot more, many of which you will experience during your exploration.

Start your discovery of Old Delhi at the awe-inspiring Red Fort. The great city inside the massive sandstone walls of the Red Fort offers visitors a large number of architectural and historical attractions. The Red Fort was the seat of the Mughal Empire for more than two hundred and fifty years and is obviously a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an amazing example of a blend of Persian, Indian and European architecture. Both this fortified city and the Jama Masjid (that you will visit later today) were built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor who created the Taj Mahal.

After this you will drive close by for lunch at the historic Curzon Room in the century old Maidens Hotel.

One of your most enduring memories of India will be your next experience as you walk through the ancient (from the time of the Mughals) Chandni Chowk Bazaar, home to the world’s largest spice market. The cacophony of sounds which have echoed through the centuries, the cries of hawkers and the animated bargaining, along with the incredible colors and the diverse smells emanating from the street food stalls and spice markets combine to make for an experience that is unique to this ancient bazaar.

The Masjid is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture and is constructed of red sandstone and white marble. It is an active place of worship and its courtyard can hold 25,000 worshippers. Bare legs and shoulders are not permitted inside the mosque and we include rented sarongs and scarves. After exploring the mosque, you will avoid the worst of Delhi’s rush hour on the drive back to your hotel.

Day 6: Delhi. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – The Oberoi New Delhi

Continue your exploration of New Delhi with a drive to the awe-inspiring 12th century Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Delhi has over 500 ancient structures strewn over its vast expanse, with many of them in various states of disrepair. For mankind’s achievements from about a millennium ago, the Qutab Minar is unmatched in its architectural brilliance and longevity.

This 240 ft tall medieval tower is a symbol of victory and a spectacular example of Persian architecture, with intricate carvings and gorgeous inlaid calligraphy.

Within the Qutab complex, amidst the ruins of the Quwat-ul-Islam Mosque, stands the legendary 2500-year-old Iron Pillar. The pillar stands 23 feet and 8 inches tall, weighs about 7000 pounds, and has inscriptions that are still legible to a great extent. This massive cast iron structure is said to have been moved from its distant cave shelter to Delhi around the 12th century.

From here you will proceed for a drive through some of Lutyens’ historic New Delhi. Your drive will take you through Delhi’s Diplomatic Enclave on tree lined avenues surrounded by embassies of the world’s major nations.

From here you can also enjoy a striking view of the India Gate at the other end of majestic and historic Rajpath, the former Kingsway.

After a very short drive on Rajpath you will arrive at the India Gate, a War Memorial to the 84,000 British Indian Army soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War, and Indian casualties in other wars. You will learn a little about the magnificent structure, which is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. From here you will be driven through a section of Connaught Place, which is New Delhi’s downtown and still retains its colonial architecture and design. Lunch will be at a fine-dining restaurant in Connaught Place, with options between multiple cuisines.

Next comes the nearby Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, which is a large gold domed Sikh House of Worship and is the most prominent Gurudwara in Delhi. It was first built as a small structure in 1783 and then expanded over the next few decades. The campus includes the temple, a kitchen, a school, an art gallery, and the Sarovar (Holy Tank) whose water is called Amrit (Holy Nectar). As with all Sikh Gurudwaras, volunteers, including children and the elderly, the extremely wealthy and not so well-off perform almost all the chores required to keep the Gurudwara functioning. A fascinating part of this is the daily langar (community meal), and you will witness as thousands of meals are served to all visitors who want one, regardless of race, religion, gender or belief. Only vegetarian food is served, so that no religions dietary restrictions are violated.

Continue your exploration of Delhi with a visit to the beautiful Lodi Gardens. This massive garden complex is spread over 90 acres of priceless real estate in the heart of Delhi, and contains the tombs of various rulers of the Pashtun Dynasty that ruled much of Northern India during the 16th century. There are lush lawns and a plethora of flowers and plants mixed in with all the monuments.

Very near the gardens is the Lodi Art District, your last destination before returning to your hotel. Delhi isn’t famous for its street art and murals, and the large amount of street art found all over this upscale part of the city will both surprise and delight you. The subject matter ranges from quirky to distinctly ethnic Indian and there will be surprises around every corner. Day 7: Delhi – Varanasi. (Breakfast and in-Flight Lunch)        Overnight – Taj Nadesar Palace

In the mid-morning you driven to the airport and assisted with boarding your early afternoon flight to Varanasi on India’s best full-service airline – lunch (decent for an airline meal) will be served during the flight. Upon landing you will be driven to your exquisite Palace Hotel. This is the only true luxury lodging in Varanasi and calling the small Nadesar Palace ‘boutique’ is a vast understatement. Built by the East India Company in the 18th century, it was taken over by the local Royal Family in the late 19th Century and served as a guest house for British and other Royalty during their visits to India. It is the centerpiece of a very large campus of gardens and organic farmland, and, time permitting, you can reserve an exploration on the Royal Family’s horse drawn carriage.

India’s holiest city is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited city on our planet with a history that dates back five millennia. The truly ancient part of the city, Kashi, is what this applies to. Among many other things, Hindu’s believe that being cremated here can free their soul from the cycle of death and rebirth. We will not try to go into details about this amazing destination, you will be introduced to some of this destination’s highlights. Benares is also home to some of our planet’s best handloomed silk and well-off Indians visit this destination just to purchase silk garments for special occasions such as weddings and other life events.

Day 8: Varanasi. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Taj Nadesar Palace

Two of the highlights of your time in Varanasi are the sunset and sunrise cruises on the Ganga. After a pre-dawn hot beverage and cookies, join your guide for a visit to the Ghats. It is a surreal experience to arrive at the Ghats just before dawn and witness the eons old scene - the most devout Hindu’s are waiting at the holiest Ghats to greet the rising sun as they immerse themselves in the Ganga, while others on the wide riverbank steps meditate and practice yoga. 

During your boat ride you will experience a private live performance of the wonderful sounds of traditional Benares Gharana, an ancient form of music incorporating the tabla and the sitar. The ambiance created by your surroundings and the traditional Benares music has to be experienced to be believed.

Return to your palace to have breakfast, and then you are at leisure until noon, when you will enjoy lunch at the highly rated Chowk Restaurant at the Taj Ganges Hotel next door. After lunch you are driven to a spot near the Holy River from where you will be escorted through a crowded bazaar catering to visiting pilgrims. Arrive at the ghats and commence a walk on the banks of the Ganga. This is a great opportunity to experience some of Hinduisms ancient and iconic rituals. Various rituals will be taking place on the Ghats. Such ceremonies include, but are not limited to, rituals where devout Hindu’s are getting their heads shaved in respect to a recently diseased parent, newly married couples are praying with a priest for blessings, while nearby another Brahmin priest orchestrates the naming ceremony of a newborn.

Your walk will end with you being assisted in boarding your boat for a cruise along the river to view its evening activities as you cruise and observe all the rituals and prayers, including the main cremation Ghat where the deceased are burned on wooden pyres in what is considered the holiest site for their earthly remains to depart from this world so that their souls can achieve salvation.

The Ghats on the holy river’s banks stretch for a few miles and are always full of activity, but the middle of the whole expanse is where the holiest Ghats are located and where the main evening ceremony takes place. You can float your own lamps from your boat while you watch the ancient prayer and oil lamp ceremony at sunset. Your boat enables you to enjoy a great view of the ceremony and hundreds of lamps as they float down the holy river. After this you are assisted with your disembarkation at an outer bank of the river.

Day 9: Varanasi – Khajuraho/Panna. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Tendu Leaf Jungle Resort

Head to nearby Sarnath after checking out in the mid-morning. Sarnath is a Buddhism pilgrimage site that is on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage List. Attractions in this holy rural area include the massive 2300-year-old Dhamekha Stupa located near where the Buddha preached his first sermons. This Stupa was constructed by Emperor Ashoka, who is credited with the spread of Buddhism in the world. Sarnath was also where the first Buddhist Sangha (Community of Buddhist Monks) was formed, and the area is home to a number of other ancient Buddhist monuments that you will drive by. A highlight of the visit to Sarnath is a brief stop at the very small Archaeological Museum with its impressive collection of artifacts, which include the spectacular 4 headed lion that is India’s national emblem.

After your exploration you will break for a late lunch as you approach the airport. Dine at the upscale Tree of Life Resort’s wonderful restaurant, AnnTripti, which serves highly rated fresh Indian and western cuisine. After lunch you are driven to the airport and assisted in boarding your short no-frills late afternoon flight to Khajuraho. Arrive at Khajuraho Airport and you driven to your beautiful nature resort, located on the banks of the Ken River. Nature is the key attraction here and your lodging is surrounded by striking jungle scenery, an exotic array of flora and fauna, and one of India’s premier tiger sanctuaries. Dinners are included at your resort during your stay here.

Day 10: Khajuraho/Panna. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Tendu Leaf Jungle Resort

In the early morning you will experience a jeep safari in the forested hills of Panna Tiger Reserve.

A few tigers were relocated from other sanctuaries, and these tigers mated and had their first cubs in 2010, and in the short time since then the number of big cats has multiplied to around 70 roaming around the 210 square mile reserve.

The reserve now offers among the best chances of seeing the magnificent cats. There is a plethora of other wildlife, including a lot of crocodiles, and the occasional elusive leopard. The rugged landscape is interspersed with gorges and waterfalls, and there is a plethora of birdlife, both migratory and indigenous. You will traverse the dirt roads and pathways of the park for about 3 hours before returning to your jungle resort for breakfast.

In the late morning you will drive to the nearby small town of Khajuraho and enjoy lunch at an upscale hotel before the highlights of this excursion. After lunch you will experience the awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. These magnificent examples of Hindu religious art were constructed between 900 and 1400 years ago, and are sometimes referred to as the Kama Sutra Temples. Roughly twenty thousand extremely detailed stone sculptures adorn the facades of these temples, and about 10% of the sculptures portray very explicit erotic scenes. The sophisticated design and building techniques that were used in the creation of these temples and the detailed artistry of the sculptures cannot be described in words – you have to experience them personally to grasp their impact.

This late afternoon you will experience a cruise on the Ken River as it winds through the picturesque Panna Tiger Reserve Region. Besides frequent sighting of wildlife and exotic species of waterfowl, the colors of rocks (granite, dolomite, and quartz) on the surrounding gorges make this for a fascinating hour-long experience. Return to your resort as the sun starts to set on the river and its surroundings, creating a perfect ending for a day full of unique experiences. Dinner is included at your jungle resort this evening.

Day 11: Khajuraho/Panna – Orchha – Agra. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – IHCL Tajview Hotel by Taj Hotels

After a slightly early breakfast, you will enjoy a scenic road journey that goes by sweeping pastoral regions and small villages. Arrive at Orchha and there is a break for lunch. After lunch you will experience a brief exploration of some of Orchha’s archeological treasures, built by the local Hindu kings in the 15th and 16th Centuries.

After this exploration you are driven about 20 minutes to the Jhansi Railway Station. An Indian railway station is an experience an itself, always abuzz with activity as India’s vast masses travel on the world’s largest rail network. Although the stations premises are not particularly sanitary, your train and your compartment are very clean and the best that India has to offer on its passenger trains. Your seats are in the best compartment of the train, with comfortable and wide reclining seats, and great views of the rural countryside and small towns that you will pass on the 2.5-hour journey.

Your guide assists you in getting seated in your assigned seats and gets your luggage ported to the appropriate location above your seats. Refreshments are served by Indian Railways during this journey - we recommend that you refrain from consuming these (except for the bottled water). Upon your arrival at Agra Station, you are driven to your hotel. At this moderately upscale hotel, you will stay in recently renovated larger rooms that offer some of Agra’s best Taj Mahal Views.

Day 12: Agra - Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Sawai Man Mahal

Enjoy a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal. Morning is the best time to experience it in terms of crowds - it is more expensive for Indian tourists to enter at this early hour and so the massive monument and its surrounding Mughal gardens have a lot fewer visitors than the rest of the day.

Return to your hotel in time for breakfast and to prepare for the day’s journey, after which you will proceed to the first red sandstone fort of North India, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agra Fort. This Forted City was completed in 1565 by India’s greatest Mughal ruler, Emperor Akbar, and almost everything here was later copied in Delhi’s larger Red Fort. Its royal audience halls, immense stone courtyards, marble mosque and the private royal chambers give us a glimpse of the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. There are unique views of the Taj Mahal from a section of the fort, including the room where the Taj Mahal’s creator, Emperor Shah Jahan, was imprisoned during the later years of his life by his infamous son and successor, Aurangzeb.

After exploring the fort you are driven to the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, located just off the highway to Jaipur. The massive 10th century Chand Baori Stepwell is one of the most impressive in all of India and is located next to a charming Rajasthani village. The depth of the stepwell is that of a modern 7 story building, and there are stairs (no longer accessible to visitors) leading down to the bottom from three of the 100 foot plus wide (35 meters) sides, creating symmetry and beauty to the ancient structure.

You will proceed nearby to a rural resort which serves farm fresh organic and all-natural produce, as well as pasture raised chicken and lamb in its restaurant. After lunch you will continue on with your journey to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Jaipur, where you will check-in to your beautiful palace hotel. Among the many attractions of your lodging are beautiful hand carved Thikri Panels, Rajasthani murals and vintage photographs, as well as carefully preserved artifacts such as the incredible 187 year old gilded doorway of the Rambagh Palace. The sprawling lush palace grounds are a haven for birdlife, especially the scores of peacocks who are often found performing their amazing dance. You are in the center of historic Jaipur, and most of your sightseeing is fairly easy to reach despite the city’s bustling traffic.

Day 13: Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Sawai Man Mahal

Begin your exploration of the walled pink city of Jaipur. You will start with a stroll through the fascinating main bazaar in the heart of the pink city and watch the locals as they shop for pretty much everything a consumer can possibly want. This atmospheric and crowded bazaar has street sellers of vegetables, fruit and other goods occupying the curbs with their displays. There are stores selling spices, nuts, flowers, toys, footwear, hardware, and a lot more, mixed in with street food vendors and brick and mortar eating establishments. Byzantine alleys lead into inner courtyard shops.

After a few minutes of walking, you will arrive at the most photographed of Jaipur’s monuments, the enchanting Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Wind).

Jaipur is India’s capital for jewelery, and the largest supplier of exquisitely crafted jewelery to much of the world, and Johri Bazaar (jewelers’ market) is a historic enclave that happens to be the center of the largest precious stone cutting area on our planet. You will experience a short walk through a section of the area (please note that all the jewelry manufacturers are located on higher floors and so you will not be seeing the jewelers at work) and soon arrive at a small boutique hotel, The Johri. This five-room luxury inn is home an excellent restaurant where you will enjoy lunch. Locally sourced fresh organic vegetarian cuisine is served here, and you will order ala carte from their menu of seasonal and regional offerings. We strongly recommend all their chaat and appetizer items, but their main entrees are not to be missed either.

After lunch you will proceed for a visit to the Jantar Mantar (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a fascinating stone observatory built in 1728. Among other instruments, it includes a massive stone sun dial that is accurate to within 2 seconds. Located next to Jantar Mantar is the City Palace, the royal residence that was built in a delightful blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. A part of this massive complex is still occupied by the Royal family and is not accessible to the public. Your Tour Director will regale you with stories of royalty as you admire their trappings. This immense complex also houses a number of museums that include displays of armor, miniature paintings, and a large and impressive collection of ancient royal garments and accoutrements.

Day 14: Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Sawai Man Mahal

Today will start with three of Jaipur’s off the beaten tourism track historical destinations, which also happen to be among the most wonderful opportunities for photography in India. First you are driven to a very scenic location in Jaipur adjacent to a public park, The Albert Hall Museum, which was completed in 1887 by the architect Samuel Swinton Jacob. You won’t enter the museum as this stop is solely for you to walk around and take-in the absolutely gorgeous Indo-Saracenic architecture. Rudyard Kipling (himself the son of a museum curator) on a visit was so impressed that he wrote "it is now a rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards".

From here you are driven to the ancient Hindu pilgrimage site of Galtaji, located in a crevice in the Aravalli Hills. This 15th century complex of temples here is sometimes referred to as the Monkey Temple by tourists because a large tribe of monkeys lives here and believes they own the complex. The picturesque complex of temples has seven ponds that are fed by springs on the surrounding hilltops, and Hindu pilgrims consider taking a dip in these to be purifying. The beautiful temple complex has been a retreat for a sect of Hindu ascetics since the 16th century.

The monkeys agree and swim around the main pond with reckless abandon, and many of them can be seen diving into the tank from various vantage points.

Monkeys are everywhere, and they are obviously in-charge! For someone not used to their social behavior and grooming rituals, observing them can be fascinating.

From here you will be driven to Jaipur’s best kept secret, the royal cenotaphs known as Gaitore ki Chhatriyan. By now you will have seen many examples of Chhatri’s (ornate umbrella shaped domes), but those that cover the individual tombs and structures here are a sight to behold, and an incredible Instagram opportunity. In a city full of UNESCO Sites and incredible colors, this complex is sometimes our guests’ favorite memory of Jaipur. Although you are still in today’s Jaipur, this spots serenity and scenery is a surprising break from the crowds and noise. The complex was first used in 1733 AD for a tomb that marked the cremation site for Jaipur’s Rajas. Although each of the smaller structures is worth a detailed exploration, the highlight is the large intricately carved white marble cenotaph of Jaipur’s founder, the legendary Maharaja Sawai Jai Singhji.

On the way to your next destination, you will stop for lunch at the excellent restaurant at your hotel as it lies on the way.

This complex was completed in 1599 AD after 25 years of construction. You will be driven to the back entrance as Easy Tours does not offer elephant-back ascents up the ramparts of the complex. The massive forted city inside the complex is one of India’s finest examples of Rajput architecture. You will explore the gorgeous chambers and hallways, which are famous for their exquisite designs and handcrafted embellishments. Your Guide will regale you with the history of the various structures as you take in the amazing workmanship of the craftsmen who created them.

You will return to your palace hotel in the mid-afternoon, and those who are interested have the option of a shopping stop along the way. Guests who are not interested will continue on and enjoy their palace’s facilities in the late afternoon. Jaipur is India’s shopping mecca for all sorts of exquisite hand-crafted items, fabrics, carpets, as well as jewelery. If some guests choose this stop, your guide will accompany you and your vehicle will return shortly to pick you up for the drive back to the palace.

Day 15: Jaipur – Narlai. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Rawla Narlai

After a slightly early breakfast you are driven to historic Rawla Narlai, a 17th century Royal Lodge located right in the middle of a wonderful and authentic ancient village. Rawla means Royal Palace, Narlai is the name of the village. Much of the so-called rural tourism offered in Rajasthan is of smaller villages that receive a constant stream of visitors and most of their guest experiences are, at least partially, staged.

The ancient royal lodge has been meticulously restored by its owners, the Royal Family of Jodhpur, and calling it boutique would be a vast understatement. There are two wings – one being the original 17th Century hunting lodge, and a more modern wing that was built around two decades ago. Near the lodge and visible from various vantage points is a massive ancient volcanic granite boulder called Elephant Hill, with a historic small Hindu Temple at its peak, and many caves carved into its facade.

Please note although that the lodge rooms in the new wing are larger and have more modern conveniences and more natural light, we recommend the rooms in the ancient wing as their incredible historical charm is a unique experience not found elsewhere. However, if you prefer natural light and/or modern conveniences, we recommend the new wing. Rooms in both wings have upscale traditional Rajasthani artwork, furnishings and décor, and the heritage wing rooms obviously have more antiques. If you choose the new wing, you will still experience a lot of the 17th Century lodge’s original features. You will select your room preference soon after your tour reservation.

The cuisine served at the lodge wins accolades from everyone who stays here, and most of it is sourced from their own organic farms and orchards, as well as other farms surrounding the village. The chefs are attentive and will customize your meals to your preferences, and just like in every resort that you will stay in while in Rajasthan, there are live local cultural performances every evening. The lodge also offers exceptional service levels – nothing is too much for the staff.

Ancient Stepwell Magical Dinner Experience: After sunset you will be assisted in climbing aboard traditional bullock carts and transported through the dark countryside to a charming 16th Century stepwell. Your magical dinner will be at the stepwell, accompanied by live local folk music and accented by hundreds of oil lamps adorning the steps of the stepwell. As you enjoy a multi-course dinner of local delicacies and the lodge’s attentive service, the oil lamps and countless stars will illuminate this amazing night.

Day 16: Narlai – Udaipur. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Vatsalya Vihar

Guests can select one of two activities for the early morning today, or choose to relax and sleep in. Couples and family/friends can temporarily separate to enjoy one or the other. You will need to select your preference soon after finalizing your reservations.

The first option is to accompany one of the lodge stewards (they do this daily) up the 756 ancient hand carved steps that lead to the peak of Elephant Hill where you can enjoy the spectacular views and visit the small Hindu Temple. Your lodge steward will carry a hot beverage and snacks for your refreshment at the top of the boulder.

Sightings of tigers at India’s better National Parks are much more frequent than leopards, but leopard sightings are fairly common around Narlai, which is not a National Park. At the least you will enjoy an adventure into small rural communities and the jungle – 88% of our guests have had one or more leopard sightings during this adventure. The ride is bumpy as you are traversing rough terrain.

In both cases you will return to the lodge to have a late delicious breakfast and then you can enjoy your fascinating surroundings for a little while. You will check out just before noon and, proceed on the drive to Udaipur, with a short diversion for a fascinating stop. A very short drive will bring you to one of India’s least known architectural marvels, the 15th Century Ranakpur Jain Temple, which also happens to be an active place of worship.

Explore the awe-inspiring marble temple complex. The main temple’s twenty-nine halls are supported by fourteen hundred and forty-four massive yet intricately carved marble pillars, and no two are of the same design. There is an abundance of intricate sculptures and friezes and the enormous scale of the monument and the exquisite details of its design have to be experienced to be believed.

You will break for lunch after exploring the temple complex. After lunch you will continue on with your journey to Udaipur. This is one of the most picturesque drives in all of India. As you go through the Aravalli hills there will be photo opportunities of village life and livestock, including many camels. The rolling landscape and the charm of the local villages and their colorful inhabitants will fascinate you during this 2-to-2.5-hour journey. Arrive at your beautiful boutique nature resort, located very near the town of Udaipur, in the late afternoon and you are assisted with check-in.

Staying at this resort is one of our guests’ favorite experiences while in India. There are only 7 large upscale villas and suites in the 9+ acre campus, and you are surrounded by gorgeous gardens and the resort’s organic farm and orchards, from which you can pick your meal ingredients while opting for Indian or western cuisine. The orchard has a plethora of fruit trees, an olive garden, and a lot more. Service is exemplary, and matches the wonderful fresh ala-carte cuisine served here.

The resort is a labor of love for its affluent owners, who are both involved in making sure all guests love their stay here. There are bike and walking trails, a pool and gym facilities, and a lot more. After acquainting yourself with your hosts and the resort, you will enjoy a wonderful dinner cooked to your preferences.

Day 17: Udaipur. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Vatsalya Vihar

This morning you are driven to visit the Monsoon Palace, a small hilltop structure that offers amazing views of the picturesque city of Udaipur and its lakes and palaces. The journey up the hill takes you through a protected wildlife sanctuary and occasional small wildlife sightings can be experienced. After a few minutes exploring the historical structure, you will experience the spectacular view of the lakes and palaces of Udaipur, set picturesquely amidst the Aravalli Mountain range. Next up is an easy and delightful walk in the picturesque city. With its small-town atmosphere, laid back Udaipur is one of India’s best places to explore on foot, and your guide will take you for walks in small local bazaars and other interesting parts of this charming city. A brief stop during the walk will be at a gallery where accomplished local artists create Udaipur’s famous and fascinating miniature paintings. You will also enjoy a slightly bumpy (there are no shock absorbers) three-wheeler scooter ride to your destination for lunch, which will be at the lakefront Sunset Terrace restaurant at the entrance of the massive City Palace Complex.

After lunch you will enter the fabled City Palace Complex which contains multiple old palaces and other structures. You will explore beautifully decorated rooms with thousands of exquisitely sculpted mirrors covering the walls, massive ivory doors (a dark reminder of Indian royalty’s passion for hunting), brightly colored stained-glass windows, expansive inlaid marble balconies, and the unique peacock courtyard. There are amazing views to be had from this structure, especially of Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace, and Jag Mandir Island. Enjoy a tour of the amazing Crystal Gallery which houses the world’s largest collection of priceless crystal. Marvel at pieces like the complete bedroom furniture set in crystal and the gorgeous crystal fountains in the courtyards.

After exploring the complex you will proceed to the palace jetty and board your boat for a private cruise on captivating Lake Pichola to enjoy wonderful views of Lake Pichola and magical Udaipur. Disembark from your cruise and you are escorted back to your wonderful resort.

Day 18: Udaipur – Delhi – International Flight. (Brunch)

Cooking Class & Special Brunch Experience: Enjoy your last morning at your nature resort before you are assisted with your checkout around noon. Your gracious hostess at the resort is also an accomplished chef, and she and the other great cooks in her kitchen will prepare a very special meal for you this morning. You will be asked for your preferences on the previous day and you are invited to participate in the preparations for this meal, including picking fresh herbs and produce from the resorts organic farm.

After brunch you are driven to the airport (located well outside the city) and assisted in boarding your mid-afternoon flight to Delhi. Your flight in on India’s best full-service airline and, if the flight is on-time, it will be a little after 5pm by the time you collect your baggage at the domestic arrival section. All international flights depart from the international departure area of the same terminal. Please note that almost all international flights depart from India’s airports either very late at night or early in the morning.
