Koh Phi Phi Travel Information

Other than Phuket, perhaps the most well known island destination in Thailand. Unlike Phuket however, Koh Phi Phi Don is very small in size. The Phi Phi Islands are made up of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. There is no accommodation on Phi Phi Leh, as it is merely a day trip destination. When most people refer to Koh Phi Phi, they are talking about Phi Phi Don, which is a very developed island complete with resorts, bungalows, guest houses, villages, and nightlife.

Koh Phi Phi is perhaps the most beautiful island in all of Thailand, possessing sharp limestone cliffs that rise in anarchy above the white sands and crystal blue waters. The snorkeling and diving available in the islands is among the best in Asia. The islands are so exotic that they served as the filming location for the film, “The Beach”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Phi Phi Don has quite a party scene, and a lack of quality accommodations. As such, families and honeymooners usually prefer to visit on a day trip rather than stay overnight.

Getting There:
There are a large array of ferries and speedboats arriving to Phi Phi from Phuket, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta, Krabi Town, and Railay Beach every day. The islands can also be visited on a day trip from all of these locales.

As it is located on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand, the weather on Koh Phi Phi is best between November and March. From April through October is the rainy season and the beaches are sometimes not at their best. During this season, rough seas sometimes interfere with boat trips in the Bay of Phang Nga.

To be one of the world’s most exotic beach locales, there are surprisingly few quality accommodations on Phi Phi Don. The total number of accommodations is too much, and most of those are budget type places catering to the backpack type of traveler. For those who don’t mind being in a fairly bustling atmosphere, there are a couple of decent quality resorts to choose from.

Koh Phi Phi by day is all about exploring the different beaches, bays, and islands in the area that have unsurpassed beauty. An example of a typical itinerary would be:

1st Stop Bamboo Island. Wonderful desert island with superb beach and excellent coral reef to explore by snorkeling

2nd Stop Hin Klarng. Phi Phi’s No. 1 snorkelling reef in the open sea, where the most coral fish are to be found

3rd Stop Monkey Beach. Well sheltered bay on P.P., home to all kinds of marine life and even some beach monkeys !

4th Stop Tonsai Bay. Delicious Thai lunch at beachside restaurant

5th Stop Viking Cave. Brief tour of cave with ancient wall paintings, where birds nests are collected for soup.

6th Stop Pi Leh Bay. Hidden sea lagoon of outstanding beauty with high limestone cliffs on all sides

7th Stop Lohsamah Bay. Colourful snorkelling in clear, calm and shallow waters just off a small, quiet beach

8th Stop Maya Bay. Relax and admire the remarkable scenery from Leonardo Dicaprio’s The Beach movie.

Koh Phi Phi by night has a very lively party scene, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and beach parties.
