Binh Thuy Communal House Description:
The Binh Thuy Communal House is one of the most important buildings in Can Tho. Traditionally every village in Vietnam had a Communal House that acted as a combination of a temple and community center, where the local population would carry out both rituals honoring the guardian spirits of the town and hold important meetings lead by village elders.
Erected in 1893, The Binh Thuy Communal House has played an important role in the daily life of Binh Thuy’s citizens for more than a century. The Communal House’s grounds are used by the entire community for everything from public meetings to a children’s playground. It stands out as architecturally distinct from its counterparts found in Northern Vietnam with its square design, and overlapping roofs. Inside the structure there are alters for ancestor worship, as well as areas dedicated to animist spirits.
