Wangdi Phodrang Tour

Wangdi Phodrang is also known as ‘Wangdi’ and is at a height of 1,350 meters. It is 71 kilometres from Thimphu. The dzong at Wangdi is called Wangdi Phodrang Dzong. The name of the place translates into ‘the palace where the four directions are gathered under the power’. The dzong is said to have been named by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who was searching for the best location for a dzong to prevent incursions from the south. At the present chosen spot, the Shabdrung encountered a boy named Wangdi, building a sand castle beside the river and hence named the dzong ‘Wangdi's Palace’.
