Resting near the confluence of the Nam La and Man Phak Rivers, Muang La is a scenic village nestled in the rich tapestry of Northern Laos’s verdant mountains, thick forests, and gushing rivers.

The village is comprised of mostly of people from the Thai Lu ethnic group, and the mountains and forests that surround the small town are home to numerous rural tribes of Hmong and Ikhos ethnic groups. Many of these small outposts of isolated tribes welcome foreign visitors, and trekking through mountains to visit these tiny way stations of ancient culture has become one of the most popular excursions in the area. There are a number of hot springs in the area, and several fine spas that are a great way to unwind after a day of hiking.

Best Time to Visit Muang La:

Muang La’s best weather falls between October and May during the temperate dry season in Northern Laos. June sees the beginning of warmer weather that rolls into October, but it’s relatively cool in this mountainous region throughout the year.

How to get to Muang La:

Muang La is typically reached overland from Udomxai (Muang Xay), the capital city of Oudomxai Province. River cruises to the town can be arranged.
