The Deccan Odyssey is a luxury train operated by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Ltd and Indian Railways. It offers two itineraries. The standard itinerary travels along the Konkan coast, beginning in Mumbai and stopping in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Goa, Pune, Nasik, Aurangabad, and Ajanta and Ellora before returning to Mumbai. This itinerary leaves from Mumbai every Wednesday for its seven night tour. The Deccan Odyssey operates from September to April.

 
 

The Deccan Odyssey-Indian Maharaja journey also leaves from Delhi. You may journey from Mumbai to Delhi or from Delhi to Mumbai on alternating weeks. The Indian Maharaja is a seven night journey. It operates from late September through November. In 2012, it will operate from late January through mid April. The Indian Maharaja Itinerary takes guests from Delhi to Mumbai, with stops in Agra, Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Udaipur and Aurangabad. The Deccan Odyssey has been rated by the Society of International Railway Travelers as one of the World’s Top 25 Trains.


The Deccan Odyssey is perfect for the traveler who enjoys the journey as much as the destination. You will stop and explore the art, culture, wildlife and cuisine unique to Maharashtra. Enjoy the rugged coastal scenery, bounded on the East by the Western Ghats and the West by the Arabian Sea. The region is home to the hardy descendants of the Marathas, and cultivates rice, mangoes, cashews, and jackfruit. Fish is also a main staple of the diet. On your journey in the Deccan Odyssey, you will travel through valleys, green expanses and urban landscapes. Often times in the distance are misty mountains.


The Deccan Odyssey is a handsome deep blue color with golden highlights alluding to the beautiful blue skies and golden sunshine, cerulean sea waters and warm sands you will experience along the journey. The Deccan Odyssey reflects the service and opulence of five-star hotels. You are welcomed to the Deccan Odyssey and your luggage is collected for you and taken to your room. Once you board the Deccan Odyssey, you discover a complimentary bottle of wine in your cabin. A welcome packet also contains stationary, informational brochures and cards. You may send mail directly from the Deccan Odyssey. If you desire to smoke while traveling on the Deccan Odyssey, there are designated areas for this purpose. If you should need anything while aboard the Deccan Odyssey, an attendant is always available to serve you. The Deccan Odyssey also provides you with bottled mineral water anytime you request it, even on excursions.


The train has 12 sleeping carriages. All of the cabins are air conditioned and contain an electronic safe. The other standard amenities include the capability to pipe music through the room, and an array of CDs and MP3s available on request. The rooms are carpeted. There are four suites in the Deccan Odyssey, each comprising half a carriage and complete with their own sitting room and two bathrooms. The suites are very spacious, at a total of 191 square feet. The suites have a double bed. The rest of the sleeping cars contain four standard cabins, each with two twin beds and a bathroom. The standard cabins are 95 square feet and there is a lounge at the end of each of the standard cabin carriages.


On the Deccan Odyssey, you will not sacrifice modern conveniences as you travel. There is a conference car with a full business center. There is a souvenir shop on the Deccan Odyssey where you may buy Maharashtran handicrafts among other items. One of the most meaningful treasures you will have from your journey is the group photo given to you as a gift by the Deccan Odyssey. There is a well-stocked bar which serves a wide variety of wines and spirits, including International brands. You will also have reign of an onboard library, gym and a spa which offers traditional ayurvedic body massages.


You will awaken to delicious breakfasts aboard the Deccan Odyssey. All the major daily newspapers are available along with coffee and tea service. There are two restaurants aboard the Deccan Odyssey, the Peshwa I and the Peshwa II. These both specialize in Maharashtran delicacies, but you may choose between traditional Indian and Continental offerings. Maharashtra is known for its Malvani (Konkani) cuisine that uses lots of fish and spices. The name Peshwa implies "kingly", and indeed you will feel like royalty on the Deccan Odyssey.
