The Shwezigon Pagoda Festival marks the end of Myanmar’s monsoon season on the Bagan Plains.

On the night of the full moon of the eighth month of the Burmese calendar (Tazaungmone), the grounds of the Shwezigon Pagoda Festival erupt in an ancient festival that’s one part country fair, and one part traditional Buddhist ceremony. Vendor stalls spring up on the pagoda’s grounds selling traditional handicrafts like lacquerware and garments. Farmers spill in from the countryside often astride ox-drawn carts laden with their excess harvest to sell in the market, and donate to the pagoda’s monks as alms. Traditional plays are performed on small stages depicting numerous stories from both the Buddhist religion, and the ancient animist spirits that are often still worshiped in some capacity by the people of Myanmar. The smell of local delicacies being cooked to order pervades the entire complex as the festivities continue through the night.

Within the temple, red robbed Buddhist monks lead a plethora of sermons and rituals for the laymen who attend the festival.
